Geoff Morten ‘Print to Paint’
Morten Gallery will be showing five very large paintings (8’x6′) related monoprints and drawings by the painter and printmaker Geoff Morten who passed away in 2009.
He wrote: “I am involved in the essentially, subjective, practice and studio based activity of painting – this activity is supported by printmaking and drawing as a means of sifting, testing and informing the large scale finished works. These three activities, sometimes diverse, have become my established working studio practice.
“I do not give them different values – more importantly they are an ongoing dialogue or series of conversations – A SET OF TOOLS which I employ to challenge, reconcile and value discoveries which are made in the work. At various times there are specific tasks which need to be undertaken – to reinvent the work – and I employ strategies to both challenge, risk and progress the work.”
Geoff trained at York School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He taught at both Sunderland and Durham Universities lecturing at BA and MA levels and PhD supervision in Fine Art.
Exhibitions include representation in: Moscow, Chicago, London, Scotland, Canada, Australia, Romania, and a solo exhibition, ‘Recurrent Consistencies’ at the Seagate Gallery, Dundee, Scotland.
Geoff moved to California in 2003 and continued teaching, giving lectures and printmaking workshops at the University of Santa Cruz, University of Monterey Bay and Monterey Peninsular College.
Living in California gave Geoff the opportunity and freedom to explore new avenues of creativity – he began writing poetry, publishing a volume ‘Dialogues and Conversations’ to accompany his 2006 exhibition at the SCCB Arts Collaborative.
Throughout December the gallery will be open until 8pm on Fridays.
